Finasteride (Propecia) is a 5a-reductase inhibitor indicated for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) at the crown and in the middle of the scalp. It is only approved for treatment in adult men. It is also used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate.

Do not overdose yourself to compensate for the missed dose, as taking extra medication without doctor’s advice can cause you severe side effects, and won’t treat you earlier or faster. Take the medication regularly to get the most benefit from it.

Precautions and side effects

Side effects of include impotence, loss of interest in sex, trouble having an orgasm, abnormal ejaculation, swelling in your hands or feet, swelling or tenderness in your breasts, dizziness, weakness, feeling like you might pass out, headache, runny nose, or skin rash. The sexual side effects of Propecia may continue after you stop taking it. Talk to your doctor if you have concerns about these side effects. Propecia may also cause decrease in blood prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels, and can affect the PSA blood test.
