Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).It is available both as over the counter (OTC) drug and as a prescription. It is used to reduce pain, fever, muscle ache and menstrual cramps. The drug works by blocking your body’s production of certain natural substances that cause inflammation. This effect helps in decreasing swelling, pain and fever. It has an antiplatelet effect, which means the medication protects the person from blood clots. Ibuprofen works by blocking the substances (prostaglandins) that the body releases in response to illness and injury.
How to take it
The medicine is to be taken orally with a full glass of water.
Dosage
Take one tablet every four to six hours till the symptoms persist or as directed by your doctor. Do not take more than what is prescribed. The smallest effective dose should be used. Do not take more than 6 tablets within 24 hours.
Precautions and side effects
Ibuprofen is not suitable for the people who are sensitive to NSAIDS such as aspirin, have severe heart failure or peptic ulcer.
Ibuprofen can increase your risk of heart attack especially if higher doses are taken for long time. Older adults may suffer from intestinal bleeding without any warning.
