Levothyroxine is used to treat thyroid disorders such as underactive or low thyroid (hypothyroidism), enlarged thyroid, commonly known as goiter, and thyroid cancer. Low level of thyroid hormone can occur when thyroid gland producing it is injured or surgically removed. Low thyroid symptoms include tiredness, constipation, muscle aches and weight gain. There should be optimum level of thyroid in the body to maintain normal mental and physical activities.
Levothyroxine works by providing or replacing thyroid hormone which is not produced in optimum amount in the thyroid patients. It may take several weeks before you begin noticing improvement in symptoms.
How to take it
For best results, take the medicine on an empty stomach, 30 minutes to one hour before the breakfast. The medication is usually taken by mouth, and if you are taking it in capsule form, swallow it whole.

Precautions and side effects
Do not switch brands for this medication unless your doctor agrees. Do not stop taking the medication unless your doctor tells you, as thyroid replacement treatment is usually taken for the lifetime. Certain medications such as colestipol and cholestyramine may decrease the amount of thyroid absorbed by your body, so separate them by at least 4 hours while taking Levothyroxine.
