Pantoprazole is used to treat stomach and esophagus problems such as acid reflux, stomach and duodenum ulcers, damage to esophagus caused due to stomach acid and other conditions caused by excessive stomach acid. Pantoprazole belongs to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). This medication relieves symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and persistent cough. Dosage

Recommended dose of Pantoprazole for adults is 40 mg once daily for up to 8 weeks, while children aged 5 and above should be given 20 mg of Pantoprazole once a day, for up to 8 weeks.

Precautions and side effects

Side effects of Pantoprazole include diarrhea, nausea, rash, stomach pain and vomiting. Higher doses of Pantoprazole taken for a year or more increase a person’s risk of hip, wrist and spine fractures. Long-term use of PPIs such as Pantoprazole have been associated with low levels of magnesium and increased risk of heart attack. So, use of lowest doses for shortest periods of time is recommended. Call your doctor if you have watery diarrhea or there is blood in it.
