Sertraline is an antidepressant that belongs to the group of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It’s a prescription medication indicated for the treatment of major depressive disorders (depression). This medication is also a common prescription for the treatment of mental health disorders and conditions including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), social anxiety disorder and severe form of premenstrual syndrome. The drug may help improve your mood, appetite and energy level, and reduce a person’s urge to perform compulsive repetitive tasks, such as washing hands.

How to take it

Sertraline can be taken orally once a day to treat depression and obsessive compulsive disorder.

Dosage

Take the medication as prescribed by your doctor. It usually takes Sertraline 4 to 6 weeks to show results. It can be given to children 6 to 17 years of age but only to treat obsessive compulsive disorder. Medication is available as 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg tablets. It is also available as an oral concentrate of 20 mg/ml. Initial doses are 50 mg per day and they can be increased by 25 mg at one week intervals, the dose should not exceed 200 mg once a day.

Precautions and side effects

Do not take Sertraline if you are also taking pimozide or methylene blue injection. Do not use liquid form of Sertraline if you are taking disulfiram as there could be severe reaction. Seek medical attention immediately if you have serotonin syndrome symptoms such as hallucinations, agitation, fast heart rate, shivering and sweating. Before taking Sertraline, tell your doctor if you ever had liver or kidney disease, stroke, high blood pressure, seizure or bleeding problem. Make sure that your doctor knows if you are on stimulant medicine, opioid medicine or herbal products.
